About This Trek

The Annapurna Circuit is often voted as one of the best long-distance treks in the world. It circles the Annapurna massif, taking you through an incredible variety of landscapes—from subtropical forests and terraced lush paddy fields to the arid, Tibetan-style high desert of Manang and Mustang. The cultural diversity is equally striking, as you move from Hindu villages in the foothills to Buddhist Sherpa and Thakali communities higher up. The highlight is undoubtedly crossing the Thorong La Pass at 5,416m, a challenging feat that rewards you with panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Drive to Chame

Long scenic drive from Kathmandu/Pokhara to Besisahar and then off-road jeep to Chame. View of Manaslu and Lamjung Himal. Drive: 9-10 hours

Day 2
Chame to Pisang
3,200m

Trek through pine forests and along the Marsyangdi River. View of Paungda Danda rock face. Arrive at Upper Pisang. Trek: 5-6 hours

Day 3
Pisang to Manang
3,540m

Choice of upper or lower trail. Upper trail via Ghyaru offers spectacular views of Annapurna II and III. Arrive in Manang. Trek: 6-7 hours

Day 4
Acclimatization in Manang
3,540m

Rest day. Hike to Gangapurna Lake or Ice Lake (4,600m) for acclimatization. Visit the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.

Day 5
Manang to Yak Kharka
4,050m

Short day to aid acclimatization. The landscape becomes barren and alpine. Watch for Blue Sheep on the slopes. Trek: 4 hours

Day 6
Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi
4,450m

Trek to the base of the pass. Steep ascent. Rest early to prepare for the big climb tomorrow. Trek: 3-4 hours

Day 7
Cross Thorong La to Muktinath
5,416m

Start at 4 AM. Steep climb to Thorong La (5,416m). Celebrate! Long descent to the holy temple town of Muktinath. Trek: 8-9 hours

Day 8
Muktinath to Marpha
2,670m

Visit Muktinath temple. Drive or trek down the Kali Gandaki valley through Jomsom to the apple orchards of Marpha. Trek/Drive: 4-5 hours

Day 9
Marpha to Tatopani
1,190m

Descend dramatically to the deepest gorge in the world. Relax in the natural hot springs of Tatopani. Drive/Trek: 5-6 hours

Day 10
Tatopani to Ghorepani
2,860m

Steep climb up heavily forested trail to Ghorepani. Great views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges. Trek: 7-8 hours

Day 11
Poon Hill Sunrise & Trek to Nayapul
3,210m

Early morning hike to Poon Hill for sunrise. Descend to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara. Trek: 6 hours, Drive: 1.5 hours

Departure

Tourist bus back to Kathmandu or fly. End of the journey.

Difficulty & Fitness Requirements

The Annapurna Circuit is a challenging trek due to the high altitude crossing of Thorong La and the length of daily walks.

Physical Fitness

Excellent cardio stamina required. Previous trekking experience is highly recommended. Prepare by hiking and running.

Altitude

High risk of AMS. Sleeping altitude increases gradually, but the pass day is extreme (5,416m). Diamox is advised.

Terrain

Varied terrain: Rocky trails, screen slopes, icy patches at the pass, and dusty roads in Lower Mustang.

Weather

Pass crossing can be snowy and windy even in season. Cold nights (-10°C) above Manang.
